In real life, you rarely have the perfect soundtrack playing for the big moments, but that’s not true in movies (or in this case, trailers), where a lot of thought goes into such things. So Greta Gerwig – probably still best known for Greenburg and Arthur – has the ideal tracks when her romantic world falls apart in the promo for Lola Versus, which you can see over at Apple.

Gerwig’s Lola is excited at the prospect of marriage to rock star fiancé (future RoboCop Joel Kinnaman), only to arrive home one day to discover that he just can’t handle the pressure of a long-term commitment.

Advised by friends such as Alice (Zoe Lister Jones, who co-wrote the script with director Daryl Wein) and Henry (Hamish Linklater), she tries to emerge from her post-relationship cocoon by trying new things, dating new people and trying to find her place in the world as a freshly single woman. Suffice to say, it doesn’t all go that well…

From the looks of this, there are a lot of familiar indie movie beats and characters on display, but hopefully the writing / directing duo can infuse it with enough originality as to be fun. Plus, Gerwig has charm to spare, so it has a firm anchor in the centre of all the froth.

Lola Versus is out on limited release in the US on June 8, but there’s no UK date set yet. But it’s from Fox Searchlight, who brought us 500 Days Of Summer (as the trailer less-than-subtly makes clear), so there’s a good chance it’ll arrive soon after that.
