John Logan is adapting new vampire novel The Passage for Ridley Scott to (maybe) direct - and even if you're tired of vampires at the moment, stick with us, because this one is rather promising.
Based on the mammoth 1,200-page novel by Jordan Ainsley (aka novellist Justin Cronin) the story sees terminally-ill patients recover after being bitten by vampire bats in South America. The government starts conducting secret tests on human subjects to see if the effect can be replicated and used, unwittingly releasing an army of bloodthirsty vampire test subjects, including former Death Row prisoners, who - contrary to recent tradition - don't just want to take you out to a nice seafood dinner.
Logan and Scott* worked together before, of course, on Gladiator, and recently Logan's been working on a who's who of A-list directors, including Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, Michael Mann's Empire, Gore Verbinski's Rango and Juan-Carlos Fresnadillo's Bioshock. Still, we should wish him luck for this one - cutting 1200 pages into a manageable screenplay is no easy task.
*Sorry, we're having trouble writing those names together without having X-Men flashes. This may be a sign we've been reading too many comics.
