Logan’s Run Is Running

But Singer's not directing

Logan's Run Is Running

Bryan Singer had it, and dropped it. Flightplan's Robert Schwenke was discussed for a while, and then V For Vendetta's James McTeigue. But now Logan's Run is going ahead and debutant feature director Joseph Kosinski is going to be leading the chase.

The film's about an adamantium-boned mutant who's out jogging when...what's that? Nothing to do with him? I thought this was the Wolverine movie we've been waiting for. That's called Wolverine, you say. Oh.

OK, Logan's Run actually has nothing to do with mutants, but is instead set in a near-future where people are euthanised at a certain age. Anyone who refuses is dubbed a "runner" and hunted by specially trained "Sandmen". The eponymous Logan is a Sandman who himself goes on the run.

This new version is said to be based more closely on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson than the 1976 movie, exploring the concept of the greater good (the greater good) and the subordination of a society to an ideology. But don't worry kids! It'll also have chases and Sanctuary and gangs!

Kosinski apparently landed the deal when he brought Warners a presentation including concept art and animated pre-visualisation to show his ideas for the world, a sort of "low-tech" science fiction environment (translation: no spaceships. No teleportation). Given that Kosinski's background includes some very high-profile commercials that used lots of high-end CGI, and given that Warners just made 300 and are loving the whole cheap-soundstage, bit-of-CG, boffo-box-office that brought, don't rule out the possibility of an entirely CG-created environment. But that won't necessarily be bad, right? After all, Tim Sexton (Oscar-nominated for Children of Men) is writing the script, so let's hope for something equally hard-edged.
