Last we heard it had a script by Alex Garland, but Heat Vision are reporting this morning that Will Beall looks set to take another crack at adapting **Logan's Run for director Nicolas Winding Refn.

Beall, a former member of the LAPD, also wrote Gangster Squad, which is picking up steam at Warner Bros. If he does sign on to rework William Nolan's saga of the renegade "sandman" who turns on and drops out with the "runners" he's supposed to execute, he won't be the only thing that the film shares with Warners' Mickey Cohen biopic, since Ryan Gosling is being courted to star in both.

Sci-fi is a departure for Beall, who thus far has solely been tapped for cop and crime projects; he also took a shot at the projected Lethal Weapon reboot and is at work adapting his own novel LA Rex for Scott Rudin. It's all been quiet on the Lethal Weapon front recently, but his work clearly pleased franchise-runner Joel Silver, who's producing Logan's Run with Akiva Goldsman.

Logan's Run, of course, is already a classic 1976 movie starring Michael York and Jenny Agutter. Given what he did with the crime biopic in Bronson and the Viking epic in Valhalla Rising though, we're really looking forward to seeing what Refn makes of this.

Drive, Refn's version of a wheelman / heist thriller, also starring Gosling, is out in the UK on September 23.
