Hoping for more success on the small screen than it did at cinemas, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy was announced as a BBC series in 2015. It's moving forward with Dafne Keen on board to star and Les Miserables director Tom Hooper preparing to handle calling the shots.
The trilogy, which comprises the books Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, follows adventures of Lyra Belacqua (Keen) and Will Parry as they explore parallel universes inhabited by witches, armoured bears, and daemons. For this adaptation the Beeb has writer Jack Thorne crafting an eight-part series that will be shown in the UK and shopped around to international broadcasters, with the likes of Amazon and Netflix interested in rights beyond the UK.
Hooper has been in negotiations to direct all the episodes, figuring out if he can fit in shooting this and also then work on a cinematic adaptation of stage musical Cats.
Keen, of course, broke out with major impact thanks to Logan and has more recently worked on a new drama called Ana.
