Well, this was predictable. After seeing Transformers and other properties based on its brands generate billions of dollars, Hasbro was naturally going to root around in its warehouse and find new ways to turn toys and games into movies. And what better choice than a long-established title with huge name recognition, a successful current TV series and even an unexpected sub-culture – Bronies – to enjoy it? Yes, My Little Pony is even now cantering towards the big screen.

The ponies – created back in 1983 by Bonnie Zacherle, Charles Muenchinger and Steve D’Aguanno – have been the subject of TV movies and several cartoon series, but this will mark the second proper cinematic outing for the characters currently to be found gracing television with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

No plot details have been revealed about the movie, though expect a blend of life lessons and colourful adventures, with Ice Age: Continental Drift writer Joe Ballarini at work on the script under the supervision of Friendship Is Magic and spin-off video series Equestria Girls writer/producer Megan McCarthy. The stable door will open in 2017, with Hasbro taking the reins initially via its Allspark Pictures production company and starting talks with studios to handle distribution.
