When the voice cast was announced for Jon Favreau’s live action-ish remake of The Lion King, it elicited considerable oohs and aahs from all corners of the internet – particularly around the two lead roles. Donald Glover, he of Solo, Community, and Childish Gambino fame, is voicing the grown-up Simba, with Beyoncé, of being actual Beyoncé fame, taking on the role of Nala. Now, not only are they two of the most iconic actor-musicians around, but they’re lined up to take on one of Disney's all-time greatest hits: ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’. We have our first glimpse at the ultimate Beyoncé and Childish Gambino duet courtesy of a fresh teaser for the film – and obviously it’s a heavenly rendition.
Beyond that stunning photo-real animation, if there’s anything sure to get bums in seats (and handily, tickets go on sale tomorrow) for this re-do, it’s a reminder of just how incredible those Elton John and Tim Rice songs are, and the mega-stars who will be belting them out this time. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, the teaser also has more of James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa from the 1994 original.
Elsewhere, Favreau’s Lion King includes the likes of Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Alfre Woodard as Simba’s mother Sarabi, and John Oliver as Zazu. It’s a stellar line-up – and we’ll find out how they compare to the original favourites when the film hits cinemas on 19 July.
