He’s used to working with near-unknowns (and has taken lead roles himself), but with a boosted budget and loftier ambitions for his next film, Primer/Upstream Color director Shane Carruth is fishing in a higher profile pond. Anne Hathaway, Daniel Radcliffe, Chloe Grace Moretz, Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Abraham Attah and Jeff Goldblum are all prepared to take a dip in **The Modern Ocean.

That’s quite a cast, but don’t worry if you’re used to seeing Carruth’s mug on screen – he’ll be appearing alongside them. FilmNation is providing backing for the new drama, which is still largely shrouded in mystery. We do know this much though: The Modern Ocean will follow the fraught competition for valuable shipping routes, a search for a hidden cache of some priceless material and how vengeance drives a secretive world that boasts cryptic technologies and burning rivalries.

We’ll have to wait and see whether the bigger cast means Carruth also has to be less ambiguous in his storytelling, but it sounds like he’s blending the complex, thoughtful tone he's employed before with some biiger action. There’s no word on when the shoot will kick off, but we’d imagine there will be some schedule juggling in store to make that large cast work.
