With the news that The Incredible Hulk grossed around $54 million this weekend, putting it atop the US box office charts, the greenlight for a sequel can’t be too far away (even though its 2003 predecessor actually had a more impressive opening weekend).
But director Louis Leterrier isn’t counting his gamma-irradiated chickens before they hatch – he’s already lining up his next project.
The Frenchman is in talks to direct Strays, which is described as an eco action thriller (although don’t let that put you off) about a group of young consultants who, while on a business trip to Russia, mysteriously wake up in an abandoned, radioactive city. They’re then forced to struggle for survival, with a number of deadly obstacles blocking the way to freedom.
Leterrier has proved, with the new Hulk and the first two Transporter movies, that he can do action, while Strays sounds like a cross between Cube and Escape From New York, so this all sounds mightily intriguing. There’s no start date as yet, as Leterrier has also signed on to develop, so there is a chance that any Hulk sequel might take precedence. But that bridge will be crossed as and when he comes to it.
The script for Strays is by Michael Ross, who most recently worked on a remake of Near Dark, while the film has been set up at Summit, with Film 360 producing.
