Like the teenage thieves featured in the script, Sofia Coppola is wasting no time raiding casting lists for performers to join her latest film, The Bling Ring. Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister and Georgia Rock have all now signed on.
Ripped from the headlines (albeit those of 2009), Ring will tell the story of a group of teenage girls arrested in LA after breaking into the homes of celebrities including Lindsay Lohan and Orlando Bloom. Driven by their desire to copy the jewellery-bedecked and bauble-happy types they saw in magazines and on reality TV, these pilfering princesses weren’t exactly Moriarty-level criminal masterminds.
Emma Watson was cast just last week, with newcomers Chang, Pfister and Rock all set to play fellow members of the criminal gang. Broussard will be a thief who helps them out, with Farmiga as a schoolmate and Mann as the mother of two of the girls.
Coppola plans to direct her screenplay starting this spring in Los Angeles.
Mann, who last played Jason Bateman’s exasperated wife in The Change-Up, will reprise her role as Paul Rudd’s better half in Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up spin-off This Is Fort****y, which arrives on December 21 (assuming Judd isn’t still editing it by then).
Farmiga (younger sister to Vera) had a leading role on the first season of American Horror Story and appeared in big sis’ Higher Ground. Broussard made his film debut with Rob Reiner’s Flipped.
