For most of us, the phrase ‘Les Misérables’ means three things: French revolution, tears a-plenty, and lots and lots of singing. But if you’re allergic to musical theatre, come back – this year’s Les Misérables has nothing to do with ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ or Hugh Jackman’s dulcet tones. Rather, Lady Ly’s acclaimed feature debut is a searing French drama that ranks among the year’s best – and as cinemas prepare to re-open, it’s finally getting a UK release. Check out the poster below.
Ly’s film is set in the aftermath of 2018 World Cup in the Montfermeil commune in the east of Paris, as tensions revolving around race, class, and police provocation bubble over into violence and mass outcry. Though its story is fictional, it was inspired by real-life riots that took place in the French capital in 2005. The film won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2019, and was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars – and yes, it was named after Victor Hugo’s novel for its thematic resonances with that story of burgeoning revolution, and its shared location of Montfermeil. But be assured: no singing. Watch the trailer below.
