Like a recreational vehicle pulling into a petrol station, they potter onto the radar from time to time: the warm comedy drama starring a couple of acting stalwarts. The latest example in The Leisure Seeker, which finds Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren as a couple in search of a new adventure.
The title refers to the old RV used by Ella (Mirren) and John Spencer (Sutherland) to take holidays with their children in the 1970s. On a summer morning, desperate to escape a destiny of medical care that would have kept them apart forever, the couple astonish their meddling adult children (Janel Molony and Christian McKay) by hopping on board that dated vehicle and dashing down Old Route 1 towards Key West for a new experience.
Their trip through an America they no longer recognize is their chance to retrace a married life nourished by passion and devotion, but also by secret obsessions that abruptly resurface and cause surprising revelations right up to the very end.
With Paolo Virzi in the director's driving seat, the film will be out in the UK on 4 May.
