While no one was exactly surprised when the Insidious franchise spawned a third entry, quickly dated for the hectic 2015 release scrum, the producers behind it have been quiet as to who will actually make the film, especially given veteran director James Wan’s decision to eschew horror for the moment. It turns out the other person most closely associated with the films, writer and actor Leigh Whannell, will step up to direct{
Whannell, of course, is intimately familiar with the Insidious universe, as he wrote both of the first two films and was at work on the third script.
So what is in store this time? Whannell isn’t telling just yet, though we could either be in for more problems for the beleaguered Lambert family (which includes Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins) or we could see the focus shift elsewhere, following the paranormal investigators known as Specs (Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson) to a fresh case.
The latter would seem less likely given Whannell’s increased workload behind the camera, but we’d be sorry to see Specs completely excluded even if that’s the case.
Whatever ends up in front of the camera,** Insidious: Chapter 3** will be haunting our cinemas on April 5, 2015.
