Normally at this time of year, we might be looking forward to a big ol’ Star War – across the last five years, Christmas has been a season dominated cinematically by The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi, and The Rise Of Skywalker. And while there isn’t a Star Wars film to get excited about this year, there are other treats beaming in from a galaxy far, far away on Disney+. As well as the ongoing return of The Mandalorian, the streaming service is reviving that most un-hallowed of holidays: Life Day! Yes, there’s a new Holiday Special, this time an animated LEGO adventure set to swirl up all three eras of the Skywalker Saga in one irreverent blow-out. Watch the trailer here.
Doesn’t that look like fun? Set after the defeat of the First Order in The Rise Of Skywalker, the new Holiday Special sees Rey discover an artefact that sends her hopping through the Skywalker timeline. That means our Sequel Trilogy crew mixing in with Darth Vader, Original Trilogy-era Luke Skywalker, Clone Troopers and more – plus, in the most exciting crossover event since Avengers: Infinity War, an appearance from Mando and Baby Yoda himself. Awww! It’s sure to be packed with nerdy references and fun callbacks from every corner of the Star Wars galaxy – the trailer shows the return of Max Rebo on that circular piano thingy of his, Porgs hopping around in the background, yellow-saber Rey teaming up with green-saber Luke, and Emperor Palps saying "less talky-talky, more fighty-fighty". What more could you possibly want?
As for the voice cast, it remains to be seen who returns – already confirmed is Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, and Anthony Daniels as C-3PO. The voice of Rey sounds very similar to Daisy Ridley, though it’s unknown if she’s on board – and the voices for Kylo Ren and Finn seem to show that Adam Driver and John Boyega aren’t returning. Either way, this looks to be a lot of fun – and hey, it can’t be worse than the original Holiday Special, right? We’ll find out when the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special hits Disney+ on 17 November.
