During the company’s Saturday panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, Legendary made several announcements, including confirming that the Godzilla sequel is in development with several classic monster mash-ups planned. But one that seemed to wow the crowd a little less was the revelation that the company intends to explore the origins of giant ape King Kong. Still, the company is ploughing ahead with the film – called **Skull Island **– and is looking to secure Joe Cornish’s services as director.
The **Attack The Block **director has been something of a hot prospect ever since he delivered the chavs vs aliens sci-fi thriller in 2011. But while he’s got a couple of films in development – with spy pic Section 6 the closest to going ahead – he’s been offered big movies like this before and hasn’t taken them on.
So we’ll have to wait and see whether he actually agrees to this one, especially since it’ll clearly be a big undertaking and Legendary has a ticking clock on the project already, announcing a November 2016 release date at Comic-Con. Godzilla writer Max Borenstein is working on the script, and all involved will be hoping the right elements come together so the film has a better time of it at next year’s Comic-Con – or perhaps even the year after.
