It might not have quite the same awareness as DC or Marvel's characters, but Jeff Lemire's Black Hammer has carved its own particular and peculiar niche in the world. Now Legendary Entertainment thinks it could become a source for film and TV series.

Conceived by Lemire in 2007, the series had to wait until he'd completed other works and eventually began to be published, illustrated by Dean Ormston, in 2016. The stories follow a group of heroes, who along with the title character saved Spiral City from the Anti-God. Yet in the process, they became trapped in Rockwood, a timeless Twilight Zone-ish town.

Lemire and Ormston have always intended the Black Hammer series to be different from other superheroes, and to have the opportunity to comment on them. We'll see how that translates to other media. In addition to this latest deal, Lemire has several other films in development, including AD: After Death and The Underwater Welder, which has Ryan Gosling attached as producer.
