It's been a couple of years since we heard that a third Legally Blonde film was in the works to return Reese Witherspoon's Elle Woods to our screens. Things have been awfully quiet as it languished in development. Now, though, Deadline reports that the film is taking a step forward by moving sideways – Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor have made deals to write the script.

The third Blonde outing had been in the works with original writers Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah on script duty, but Kaling and Goor will bring their own new spin to the story. Quite what that is remains to be seen, as it's early days and MGM isn't talking about the new direction.

Kaling, of course, got her break with The Office and moved from there to create The Mindy Project and last year's Four Weddings And A Funeral series. More recently, she's co-created Never Have I Ever. On the big screen, she voiced Disgust in Inside Out and appeared in A Wrinkle In Time and Ocean's Eight as well as writing and starring in Late Night. Goor is a veteran of Late Night With Conan O'Brien, worked on The Good Place and ran Parks And Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Together, they've written an untitled wedding comedy that has Priyanka Chopra and Kaling attached to direct.
