If Andrew Haigh’s last film 45 Years dealt with icy, thawing cracks in a long-lived marriage, his next film is its opposite — dusty American frontier coming-of-age tale Lean On Pete. The film follows teenager Charley who takes to caring for aging racehorse Lean On Pete when he moves with his father to Portland, Oregon. When Charley learns that Pete is destined for the slaughterhouse, he takes matters into his own hands and escapes with the horse into the rural American expanse.
The film was a hit at the Venice Film Festival in 2017, earning early acclaim for young actor Charlie Plummer before he starred in Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World. He stars along the likes of Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Travis Fimmel, and Steve Zahn. Take a look at the UK trailer below.
Lean On Pete will be available in UK cinemas and on demand on 4 May.
