As we write this on the first of April, there's an extra need to be on the look out for stories that are potential jokes (hello, Netflix acquiring Seth Rogen). One that sounded like it edged towards joke territory was news that Amazon is planning a TV series based on 1992 pic A League Of Their Own, but it is in fact real.
Will Graham (not the one who hunts Hannibal Lecter, but a writer and producer on Mozart In The Jungle) and Broad City writer/actor Abbi Jacobson are making deals to create a show that The Hollywood Reporter has heard is a new take on the film's story.
That narrative, for those who have not seen the movie, finds Tom Hanks as Jimmy Dugan, drafted in to manage the Rockford Peaches. an all-team of baseball players during World War II. He's initially unsure about the idea, but the players, including Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell and Lori Petty, win him over.
Penny Marshall directed the movie, but doesn't appear to be involved with the, currently planned as a half-hour comedy series. The next step will be opening a writers room to work on scripts while Amazon makes its decision on whether to move forward.
