With its new trailer, the story for Downton Abbey: A New Era is starting to come into sharper focus. To whit: it's the roaring Twenties, and the "modern" world is once more looking to breach the defences of the Crawley family pile. Take a look:
The challenges faced by the family this time include Hugh Dancy's film producer/director, who arrives to make a talking picture at Downton, causing much consternation for both upstairs and down – ominous warnings of "actresses plastered in make-up and actors just plastered" abound. Among the latter is a notorious rake played by Dominic West.
And beyond the borders of the house there is the other big storyline, that of the villa that Violet "Dowager Countess" Crawley (Maggie Smith) reveals she's inherited, presumably from an old flame. Though with all the mystery being weaved around this one, we're starting to worry she used to be a serial killer and that the place is littered with buried corpses. Probably not, though – she mostly sticks to murdering egos with her sharp wit.
If The Gilded Age isn't completely scratching that Julian Fellowes itch, Downton Abbey: A New Era will be in UK cinemas from 29 April.
