The Christmas Chronicles – Kurt Russell

You’d better watch out, you’d better not cry, you’d better not pout, I’m telling you why: Santa Claus is coming to Netflix, and this time he’s Kurt flipping Russell. Yes, the man who gave us Snake Plissken, Gabriel Cash, and Stuntman Mike is stepping into a pair of red furry boots and growing out that already-impressive beard to play a rather svelte Father Christmas in Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles, a snow-filled adventure that the streaming service will surely be hoping to become a fresh festive hit. Check out the trailer.

From that initial teaser we’re expecting a fun if relatively generic Christmas movie – naughty and nice list, check, comedy elves, check, Christmas in peril, check – but the X factor of Kurt Russell can’t be underestimated. That, and festive family film master Chris Columbus is producing here. Will The Christmas Chronicles manage to embed itself into the Christmas film canon? It’s harder than it seems – Jon Favreau’s Elf is perhaps the best one in recent memory, with an honorable mention to Arthur Christmas.

The Christmas Chronicles is directed by The Angry Birds Movie’s Clay Kaytis, and will hit Netflix on 22 November.
