The last time actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani and director Michael Showalter worked together, we got the excellent comedy drama The Big Sick. They're reuniting for a new project, with Issa Rae set to co-star in The Lovebirds.

This time around, Aaron Abrams, Brendan Gall and Martin Gero wrote the script, which will see Nanjiani and Rae playing a couple on the brink of a break up. They're suddenly embroiled in a bizarre and hijinks-filled murder mystery and as the man and woman get close to clearing their names and solving the case, they need to figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night. It sounds like it has shades of Game Night, but we're intrigued to see what it becomes in the hands of the actors and Showalter.

Paramount is fast-tracking this one, with the cameras set to start rolling next week. Nanjiani has just been announced as announcing the Oscar nominations alongside Tracee Ellis Ross next week, and has a couple of films on the way – action comedy Stuber (12 July) and sci-fi spin-off Men In Black International, arriving before it on 14 June. Rae, the creator and star of comedy TV series Insecure, next crops up in Little, out on 12 April.
