After kicking off in style with news that Angelina Jolie is in talks to star, the casting process for Marvel's The Eternals has taken another interesting turn: The Big Sick's Kumail Nanjiani is also in talks to appear.

Created by Jack Kirby in 1976 (and famously updated in a miniseries in 2006 by Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr.), the saga began millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered and near-immortal beings and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants. The two races moved behind the scenes throughout human history.

Jolie is closing a deal to play a powerful character named Sersei who is looking to move against humankind. Which could potentially set up a big future conflict. As for Nanjiani, his character is a mystery for now in true Marvel style. Chloé Zhao is directing the film, working from a script by Matthew K. Firpo and Ryan Firpo.

Nanjiani, a regular on Silicon Valley who scored an Oscar nomination for co-writing The Big Sick, has been seeing his own geeky dreams come true in recent years. He's appeared on The X-Files and is the star of the first episode of Jordan Peele's new take on The Twilight Zone. Coming up, he'll voice an alien in Men In Black International (14 June) and appear alongside MCU veteran Dave Bautista in Stuber (12 July).
