Anyone intrigued by the opening sequences of 2013's Man Of Steel, which feature Russell Crowe as Jor-El on Krypton prior to its destruction, should find Syfy's new pilot, Krypton, an opportunity to delve even further into world of Superman's birth.
Taking place two generations before its destruction, instead of focusing on Kal-El, it follows his grandfather, who is fighting to redeem the honor of the House of El while also saving his beloved world from chaos.
David S. Goyer (intimately involved with The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man Of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice) serves as executive producer, with Damian Kindler, whose most recent credit is the Sleepy Hollow series, as executive producer and showrunner. *Peaky Blinders*' Colm McCarthy directs from a script by Goyer and Ian Goldberg (whose TV work includes Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Once Upon A Time).
“Krypton is one of the most iconic stories in the comic book universe,” said Bill McGoldrick, Executive Vice President, Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “In the talented hands of David S. Goyer and the DC Entertainment/Warner Horizon Television team, this exciting Syfy project will take viewers back to Superman’s home to show how the timeless legend began.”
Central to the potential series is Seg-El, the name given to Superman's grandfather, and relatively unknown actor Cameron Cuffe is playing him. Costarring are actress Georgina Campbell, who plays Lyta Zod, suggesting that problems between the El and Zod families have long been in place; Ian McElhinney (Val-El), Elliot Cown (Daron-Vex), Rasmus Hardiker (Kem) and Ann Ogbomo (Alura Zod).
No word at this point on whether this pilot is going to air as a TV movie before the decision is made to go the series route with it.
