With the tragic anniversary of her death coming up in a few days, it seems the worlds of film and TV are focused on Lady Diana Spencer right now. There's a musical about her life in the works, The Crown has Elizabeth Debicki taking over the role and, perhaps most prominently, Spencer, with Kristen Stewart in the lead. Following the much-praised teaser poster (find that lower down the page), the first trailer has arrived.
With Pablo Larrain directing from a Steven Knight script, Spencer takes place in 1991 when the marriage of Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) and Princess Diana has long since grown cold and distant. The Queen decrees that, amid swirling rumours of affairs and a potential divorce, the family must put on a good show for the public and try to make peace around the Christmas celebration at Sandringham.
Diana knows the game, but while the family indulges in eating, drinking and hunting, things will be profoundly different this year. Taking creative licence, the film imagines what might have happened during those fateful days.
Scored with a choral version of 'Perfect Day', this is really a taste of what the film will be, and it looks to be another winner from the director of Jackie.
Spencer will have its world premiere at this year's Venice Film Festival on 3 September ahead of a release in US cinemas on 5 November. There isn't a confirmed UK date yet, but the film will arrive this year.
