Not content with dramas and comedies as the company attempts to compete with other, established streaming services, Apple has splashed the cash to order its first animated series. It has handed out a two-season order to Central Park, a new musical 'toon from Loren Bouchard and actor/writer Josh Gad. It'll star the likes of Gad, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci and Leslie Odom Jr.
With Gad and Bob's Burgers creator Bouchard working alongside Bob's writing alumnus Nora Smith to bring the show to life, the story will focus on a family of caretakers who live and work in New York's Central Park. They're fated to save the park – and essentially – the world from some terrible fate.
A musical series is an ambitious one, but given the songs that dot Bouchard's current show and the talent he and his co-creators have assembled, it certainly sounds fun. Lending their pipes alongside those already listed are Odom Jr's fellow Hamilton original Daveed Diggs (another piece of news for him today), Kathryn Hahn and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's Titus Burgess. There's no indication yet when this or any of Apple's other planned series – including dramas from Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon and Damien Chazelle and a new space series from Battlestar Galactica reboot mastermind Ronald D. Moore.
