After having to deal with an ancient mutant threat and ‘80s clothing as Nightcrawler in next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, you’d think Kodi Smit-McPhee might want to enjoy the modern world for a while. Nope! McPhee is close to starring in Albert Hughes’ Ice Age-set survival thriller The Solutrean{ =nofollow}.

To be clear, the Book Of Eli director didn’t marathon the adventures of Ice Age heroes Sid, Diego and Manny, but is instead planning something that sounds akin to Roland Emmerich’s 10,000 B.C. Hughes dreamt up the idea and Dan Wiedenhaupt has written a script from that with a story set 20,000 years ago in Europe during the Upper Paleolithic period. You know, the “party period”. And in case you’re wondering, the title comes from a type of tool and weapon construction in the time, drawing its name from the location where many of the items were discovered, Solutré in France.

Smit-McPhee will play a young man who must cross miles of dangerous, weather-whipped territory to reunite with his tribe. Well, at least he had training in tough conditions while filming The Road. The Solutrean is planned as an epic adventure with an eye to IMAX 3D screenings. Shooting will start either in the next month or so or in early 2016 in Iceland and Canada.

X-Men: Apocalypse, meanwhile, will be out in the UK on May 19 next year.
