After early wins by The Social Network, The King’s Speech is looking more and more like the presumptive champion come Oscar night. While a lot can happen between now and February 27, the film completed another big step on the road to Academy Awards Glory, winning both the Leading Male Actor and Ensemble Cast gongs at last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.
In fact, it was a fairly down-the-line event, with Natalie Portman scoring Leading Female Actor for Black Swan. The Fighter dominated the supporting roles, however, with Christian Bale as Supporting Male Actor and Melissa Leo walking away with Supporting Female Actor.
Even the TV awards were somewhat predictable – Boardwalk Empire took Leading Male Actor (Steve Buscemi) and Drama Ensemble, Alec Baldwin won the Male Comedy Actor award, Al Pacino and Claire Danes walked on stage to collect the Male and Female TV movie/miniseries awards and Julianna Margulies added Female Drama Actor to her trophy collection for The Good Wife.
If there were any surprises, it was Betty White’s win for Cable Comedy Series Hot in Cleveland and Modern Family triumphing over Glee in the Ensemble In A Comedy Series award.
And in the night’s most emotional moment, Ernest Borgnine got a well-deserved Life Achievement Award.
The winners in full, then…
