For years now, Venus and Serena Williams have dominated the world of tennis with their astonishing abilities on the court – and the story of how they got their start is perfect fare for a sports movie. From director Reinaldo Marcus Green, King Richard tells the story of the young Williams sisters through their father Richard, played by Will Smith – a dedicated dad whose particular methods and constant commitment helped his daughters go from Compton to centre court. Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton star as Venus and Serena respectively – and early word has it that the legendary, ever-charismatic Smith gives one of the greatest performances of his career as Richard, enacting his 78-page plan to get his kids onto the world stage. The screenplay is written by Zach Baylin, who’s currently writing Creed III for Michael B. Jordan, and the film is produced by Venus and Serena themselves, alongside their sister Isha Price.

King Richard is due to arrive in UK cinemas from 19 November – but if you’re lucky enough to snap up tickets, it’s also screening at this year’s BFI London Film Festival on 15 and 16 October. Get in there quick – this one could be an ace.
