It’s been a strange year for the filmmaker and unstoppable podcasting force that is Kevin Smith. The Clerks director almost died earlier in 2018 of a sudden heart attack immediately after filming a stand-up comedy special, but if anything it seems to have made him even more prolific. As well as his horror anthology Killgrave Was Here and the upcoming Jay & Silent Bob reboot (called Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, appropriately enough), Smith has teased a ‘huge’ project that he’s written for, involving a ‘massive IP’ (intellectual property).
Writing on Instagram, Smith said: “Just finished a huge writing gig that I haven’t talked about publicly yet. It’s the most massive IP I’ve ever been allowed to play with and if the powers that be decide to move forward with the project, it would be the biggest budgeted anything I’ve ever done. Wish me luck…”
While it sounds like the project isn’t a dead cert for heading into production, if it does get the green light we could see Smith get the chance to play with an established character or universe. While he’s previously stated that he’s more into watching Star Wars and Marvel movies than making them, he has been engaged in the DC universe having helmed multiple episodes of The Flash and Supergirl. There’s nothing concrete yet about what Smith is involved in, but you can be sure that if for any reason it doesn’t happen then he’ll likely end up talking about it on one of his many, many, many podcasts.
