Earlier this year, Marvel fans got the news they were hoping for: after his ousting from the MCU, James Gunn was re-instated as the director of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. And while he’s working on DC’s The Suicide Squad first, we can expect the next adventure with Star Lord and co. to arrive later in Phase Four of Marvel's franchise. It’s not only Guardians viewers who are relieved about Gunn’s return – MCU head honcho Kevin Feige is chuffed about it too.

Speaking to io9, Feige confirmed that the next Guardians will arrive later than originally planned (it was initially going to shoot in 2019) and spoke about Gunn's reinstatement. “I won’t say specifically [when Guardians 3 was coming out] but I will say we’re delaying when the film would have originally been,” he said. “But thankfully [Gunn] is back and he’s doing it and all is right with the world.” Despite the delayed production, Gunn will still be working from the script he turned in to Marvel before his departure – though Feige claimed there’s room for amendments should the writer-director want to mix things up.

For now, we’ll next be seeing the Guardians in Avengers: Endgame – or will we? Rocket Raccoon is the sole member of the team left un-dusted in Thanos’ attack, with Nebula also still knocking around from the Guardians-verse. Here’s hoping they can succeed in bringing Peter Quill, Drax The Destroyer, Groot – and maybe even Gamora – back from the dirt. We’ll find out when Avengers: Endgame hits UK cinemas on 25 April.
