Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer were already announced for the film, but with the cameras now rolling on Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On The Basis Of Sex, the cast is increasing considerably. Kathy Bates, Justin Theroux, Jack Reynor, Sam Waterston, Stephen Root and Cailee Spaeny are all now aboard.
Jones stars as Ginsburg, a woman who has spent her career championing women’s rights and smashed the glass ceiling more than once. She co-founded the first law journal on the subject of gender equality, became the first woman professor tenured at Columbia university. In 1993, Bill Clinton nominated her to the Supreme Court, making her the first female Jewish Justice.
Hammer is her husband, Marty, who split his time between his own successful career and working alongside his wife to push action on gender discrimination. Mimi Leder is calling the shots now in Montreal, working from a script by Daniel Stiepleman, Ginsburg's nephew. "Our story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg resonates with me on so many levels – from the inspiring partnership she found in her marriage, to overcoming adversity as a woman and discovering the strength of her own voice, to her empathetic commitment to those in need of a voice no matter their gender, race, status or religious beliefs," says the director. "In these tumultuous times, stories like this speak to the heart of humanity and remind us what it means to lead with love and compassion as the way forward." There's no news on a release date yet.
In addition to the new casting, the first image of Jones as Ginsburg has also arrived.
