It's hard to believe it's somehow been seven whole years since Kathryn Bigelow's last movie, the incendiary John Boyega led Detroit, hit our screens. But now the action thriller specialist behind The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty is preparing to make her return to the directorial hotseat with a new pulse raiser for Netflix — and she's bringing together quite the cast for her comeback. Per Deadline's reporting, Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty star Jason Clarke is the latest to join the director's as-yet-untitled new movie, whose stacked ensemble also includes *deep breath* Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Jared Harris, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee, Tracy Letts, Moses Ingram, Anthony Ramos, and Gabriel Basso!
Plot details on Bigelow's latest remain, much like its title, firmly under wraps at this stage. However, according to reports, the movie will see Bigelow in familiar political thriller territory with the action unfolding at the White House as a national crisis unfolds. THR's sources offer a little more insight, suggesting that the national crisis is more specifically an incoming missile crisis, with the film's hook being that it will play out as a real-time thriller as US officials scramble to avert disaster. Whilst this particular plot would fit well within Bigelow's milieu, it is of course important to note that nothing has been officially confirmed by the director or by Netflix at this point in time.
Still, even without a title, a locked-in plot, or a release timeframe, there's more than enough to be excited about here already. A new Kathryn Bigelow movie! With one of the best cast lists we've seen all year! And a reunion with Jason Clarke, arguably the low-key MVP of last year's similarly star-stacked Oppenheimer! Sounds to us like a recipe for a hell of a big movie — so let's just hope Netflix do the right thing and make sure it winds up on the big screen too. Fingers crossed!
