The story of Nigerian children sent for what their parents hope was a better life in the UK is the subject of a new drama. Kate Beckinsale, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Damson Idris are all starring in Farming.
Actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is making his directorial debut with the film, which will be based on his award-winning script. It channels his own experiences being fostered by a white family. Idris is playing Enitan, who was "farmed" by his family at a young age to a British family in England. While his parents were thinking this might give him a more hopeful future, he grows up to lead a white skinhead gang in the 1980s. "I'm thrilled to be finally bringing this important story to the world, which will serve as the voice of a forgotten generation," Akinnuoye-Agbaje says in a statement.
Beckinsale will be his foster mother, a stern and self-serving woman called Ingrid, while Mbatha-Raw is playing a teacher who offers him one last chance at redemption. Akinnuoye-Agbaje is aiming to kick off shooting this August in Nigeria and the UK.
