Filming is already underway in Berlin on Mute, Duncan Jones’ fourth film (after Moon, Source Code and Warcraft), and now news comes of a late addition to the cast. Justin Theroux has signed up for Jones’ futuristic sci-fi movie, in a currently unnamed role.

Theroux joins Alexander Skarsgård and Paul Rudd on the project, which sees Skarsgård play a mute bartender in a futuristic Berlin, searching for a woman who has disappeared. Jones described it to Empire as a “thriller with a very weird tone,” explaining that "it goes very dark, then it also goes very darkly funny. It’s science-fiction urban, so it certainly owes some of its influence to Blade Runner.”

Intriguingly, it also exists in the same fictional universe as Moon, offering up the tantalising possibility of a Sam Rockwell cameo.

As we exclusively revealed in a podcast chat with Skarsgård, the film will debut on Netflix, alongside what is likely to be a limited cinema release window, similar to the strategy used by Beasts Of No Nation.

In the meantime, Justin Theroux can be seen in The Girl On The Train, currently in cinemas, and The Leftovers on HBO/Sky Atlantic. Filming continues on Mute, with a late 2017/early 2018 release date more than likely.
