The sequel to the sequel no one really knew they wanted (and then were pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be tons of fun), Jumanji: The Next Level is just a few weeks away, heading back into the game after Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle resurrected the spirit of the 1995 film. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are back as the avatars of the teens who fell in too deep – but this time, there's something different about the characters.
The final trailer reminds us of the_Freaky Friday_-esque nightmare of the premise: beyond just being assigned random characters, the game has now brought Spencer's (Alex Wolff) grandfather and his friend into the game. That might look like The Rock, but it's actually Danny DeVito. And Kevin Hart? Why, that's Danny Glover on the inside, of course. To continue the video game analogy, the sequel looks like an expansion pack for the previous instalment – delivering a new sand-filled dune area of the game which poses problems for Jack Black’s Shelly Oberon, whose weaknesses now include “heat, sun and sand”. Plus, there are more amusing body-swap gags, and Johnson and Hart continuing to get the best lines.
Alongside the fantastic central four, Nick Jonas returns and Awkwafina joins the Jumanji universe. With new personas and even more corners of the world to explore – the stakes of the game will only grow greater by the time Jumanji: The Next Level hits cinemas on 11 December.
