Here’s what we know so far about Judd Apatow’s next film: it’s a comedy, and he’s writing, producing and directing it. It’ll be out , on June 1, 2012. And that’s about it.
Yes, the big announcement about Apatow’s new movie wasn’t exactly crammed with details, since he’s still busy bashing out the script (in between, we assume, being a husband/father and posting pictures of himself on Twitter).
And of course there’s nothing about the plot, though we wonder if he’ll return to the geeks & hot girls territory that served him so well with 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, or branch out further into the realms of drama/comedy as he did with Funny People.
Despite the fact that Funny People didn’t exactly set the box office on fire, Universal is happily staying in the Apatow business, most likely because he’s still a respected brand-name filmmaker and the movies he produces tend to do decent business, even if it's often for other studios.
Right now, he has David Wain’s Wanderlust, Kristin Wiig and Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids, Business Trip (starring Leslie Mann AKA Mrs Apatow), a new Pee-Wee Herman pic and at least three other films bubbling away. Which might explain why he’s taken so long to get a new project for himself up and running.
We’re just happy he’s back in the saddle. And you? What do you want from a new Apatow pic?
