Did you feel that? The geeky parts of the internet a-quivering? That’s the rumble of a brand new Joss Whedon project breaking online – the man behind Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and the first two Avengers movies has confirmed his first new project in years, and it’s an original TV series being produced over at HBO.

As a statement released by the premium network reveals, the show is called The Nevers, and will find Whedon in typically sci-fi oriented territory. Rather than blasting off to the far reaches of the ‘verse or settling on Californian suburbia, the series will be a period piece set in the Victorian era. HBO describes it as “an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.”

The Nevers marks Whedon’s first originally-created show since 2009’s Dollhouse – while he helped launch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen have served as showrunners on that one. On his new project, Whedon will be showrunner, executive producer, writer and director. “The Nevers is maybe the most ambitious narrative I’ve created,” he teases. “It’s been too long since I created an entirely new fictional world.”

Not only is this Whedon’s first major work since Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it comes following his time working on — and eventually leaving — DC’s Batgirl film. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months – with Game of Thrones wrapping up next year, it sounds like this will be one of the shows aiming to fill the void left by the major fantasy saga when it wraps up once and for all.
