Josh Lucas must have a thing for real-life journalism stories. Fresh on the heels of word that he’s signed to play a fictional hack in a thriller inspired by the story of executed reporter Daniel Pearl comes news that he’ll play an FBI agent in Smart.

Based on the life of GQ and Esquire founder David Smart, the movie will chronicle his eccentric, Howard Hughes-alike existence, which saw him consumed by a fear of germs. Along with colleagues, he shot a load of instructional films for school kids on the importance of good hygiene. But despite his oddball persona, he was still a lady-killer and something of a poser.

Charlie Peters has written the script, which will see Lucas’ agent character infiltrate Smart’s world. There’s no director attached yet, and no one has been announced as playing Smart.
