The fickle and all-consuming eye of the Reboot Machine has alighted upon 1996's Twister. And according to Variety, Universal is in talks with director Joseph Kosinski to handle the new movie.

Jan de Bont directed the original, which starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as Bill and Jo Harding, storm chasers on the brink of divorce, who team back up to throw themselves into harm's way to create an advanced weather alert system. Cue giant wind spouts, flying cows and destroyed cars. Plus a $494 million box office and Oscar nominations for its sound and visual effects teams.

Veteran producer Frank Marshall is shepherding the new film, and the studio is looking for a writer to crank out the script. Which means there's no official word yet on what the story will be this time besides the obvious.

Kosinski is using his lockdown time to put the finishing touches to Top Gun: Maverick, which will is scheduled to arrive on 23 December.
