He's currently busy feeling the need for speed as he directs Top Gun: Maverick, the follow-up to the iconic '80s action film. Yet it would seem that Joseph Kosinski also has his next job in his sights, signing on to direct a new science fiction tale called Spiderhead for Netflix.

Not somehow an extension of the ever-expanding Spider-Man universe, this is actually a script adapted by Zombieland and Deadpool duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Spiderhead originated as a short story published in The New Yorker by George Saunders that is set in the near future, when convicts are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects in hopes of shortening their sentences. When one prisoner finds himself the test patient for a new pharmaceutical capable of generating feelings of love, he begins questioning the reality of his emotions and sets out to discover the truth. The film would mark a return for Kosinski to the genre that helped launch his big screen career with the likes of Tron: Legacy and Oblivion.

Deadline reports that Kosinski plans to start the casting process for this one soon, so he can start work on it as soon as he's finished Top Gun: Maverick. That one will fly into cinemas on 17 July 2020.
