Aside from a vocal cameo in The Last Jedi, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's most recent dalliance with science fiction was Looper. He's returning to the genre properly for a new, untitled Netflix movie that will co-star Jamie Foxx.
Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who made films such as Nerve, Viral and two entries in the Paranormal Activity franchise, are behind this one, working from a script by Mattson Tomlin and Chris Bremner that was at one point called Power. JGL will play a cop who must get a dangerous, highly addictive drug off the streets of Portland. The twist being, this particular narcotic grants users superpowers, and our hero will discover that the only to stop them means taking the drug himself. Foxx's role is a mystery for now. And it seems as though sci-fi tales about drugs are a thing right now.
Joost and Schulman, who also work on the Catfish TV series based on their infamous 2010 documentary, will start shooting the new movie next month in not Portland, but New Orleans. Gordon-Levitt next has hijack thriller 7500 on the way, while Foxx will be seen in Robin Hood, out on 21 November.
