With European Film Market getting under way this week in Berlin, we’re naturally seeing a lot of announcements about movies for sale there, and the horror genre is a reliable workhorse on that front. Joseph Fiennes and Homeland’s Morena Baccarin are the stars of one of the prospects headed to the market, The Unholy.
Ross Katz will direct the film. He's working from a script by EL Katz, which has its roots in an idea by REC creators Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza.
The pair sparked to an idea from scientific research that suggests evil may be hardwired into our genetic code – though honestly, the designers of plastic packaging for some gadgets are surely evidence of this, and it didn’t need money spent on science.
Still, The Unholy finds a group of boundary-pushing scientists investigating whether they can link evil to a specific human gene, which has the Vatican reaching out to them to launch a global search for likely exorcism candidates. Naturally, that’s when things start to go a little scary…
Fiennes should be prepared for horrific events after spending a season on show American Horror Story: Asylum. Baccarin can usually be seen on the CIA drama (though she’ll always be Firefly’s Inara to us) but has also shot high school reunion comedy** Old Days** alongside Nick Swardson and Michael Rosenbaum.
