Sequels to cinema classics are tantalising and troubling propositions — when they're bad, they're gutting; when they're good, they're Blade Runner 2049. It seems Jordan Peele isn’t totally ruling out a follow-up to his debut film Get Out, the satirical horror-thriller which became a box office smash, earned three major Oscar nominations, and — most prestigiously of all — came out at #1 in Empire’s Best Movies of 2017 list.
Peele was recently asked about the prospect of a sequel by The Hollywood Reporter, to which he replied: “I will definitely, seriously consider it. I love that universe, and I feel like there is more story to tell. I don’t know what it is now, but there are some loose ends that feel like they want to be tied up. I’ll throw that out there.”
For anyone worried about a second film failing to live up to the first, Peele qualified his answer, adding: “I would never want to do a sequel that just feels like [it’s] for the sake of a sequel. I would have to have a story that I feel like would take it up a notch.” With — spoiler warning — Daniel Kaluuya’s Chris surviving the film’s bloody climax thanks to Lil Rel Howery’s TSA agent Rod, and both characters knowing the secrets of the Armitage family, the seeds of what comes next could already have been sown.
Peele hasn’t yet announced what his next project will be, but for now the Get Out campaign continues with the Oscars and, more importantly, the Empire Awards still to come.
