While it should probably be titled G.I. Joe: Recuperation after the battering events of Retaliation, Paramount is happy enough with the box office returns on the second film ($365 million worldwide) to kick off work on a third. Today, Deadline brings news that Retaliation**’s director Jon M. Chu has been recruited to call the shots again.
Having survived production issues, delays for 3D conversions and a serious dearth of positive reviews, the** G.I. Joe** franchise is getting set to pump out another entry, hopefully with Dwayne Johnson putting more boots to asses.
Casting has yet to be decided, though, and first the thing will need a script (no jokes about the first two not bothering, please). Paramount is now entertaining pitches from a short list of four writers and is expected to lock one down shortly. From the sounds of it, Retaliation’s Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese aren’t coming back.
That also means nothing is known about the plot yet, though we can expect the Joes to face more of Cobra’s troublemaking machinations and a threat to the whole world. Perhaps London will be left alone this time…
