You might not expect the scathingly satirical and often disturbing techno-fear series Black Mirror to be a likely candidate for a Christmas special. But that’s exactly what Charlie Brooker and the team are planning for this festive season, and they’ve roped in Jon Hamm, Rafe Spall and Oona Chaplin to headline the cast.

The new episode will be a 90-minute special featuring three interwoven stories that will all be linked by Hamm’s character, with a promise that the show will be weirder than ever. Sounds about right for Christmas…

“I am beyond thrilled to be a part of the Black Mirror Christmas Special – I have been a massive fan of the show since its inception,” says Hamm in Channel 4’s press release. “Its dark humour and intelligent observation of our society and values hooked me deeply as a viewer and I'm honoured that Charlie and the rest of the creative team have asked me to participate in wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.”

Brooker himself appears pleased with the casting: “I'm revoltingly happy that Jon, Rafe and Oona are participating in the horrible pageant that is Black Mirror. As far as I'm concerned their presence is a huge Christmas present that's arrived early."

There’s no transmission date for the special yet, but it kicks off shooting this week. And if you’re a Hamm fan, check out his most recent visit to Empire’s Pod-booth…
