While it takes place in a little-explored corner of the Star Wars timeline, it looks like The Mandalorian will feature plenty of familiar elements. Series executive producer Jon Favreau has teased the latest veteran popping up: droid R5-D4.
He might not be on the level of, say, R2-D2, but R5 was featured in the memorable scenes in the original film, where the Jawas attempt to sell him to Luke's family, only for his motivator to malfunction and destiny to follow. R5 joins rogue assassin droid IG-88 in the cast, which also includes Pedro Pascal as the title character alongside Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers and Werner Herzog.
Set between the fall of the Empire in Return Of The Jedi and The Force Awakens, the first 10-episode series will chronicle the lone gunfighter operating far from the authority of the New Republic.
Favreau wrote the series, with directors including Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Taika Waititi, Deborah Chow and Rick Famuyiwa. The Mandalorian will debut on the Disney+ streaming service, which will launch later this year.
