With superheroes still dominant at the box office, even those who have been trapped by the bonds of development are aiming to break free and fly to our screens. Case in point: Mighty Mouse, the 'toon rodent whose fate – on a script level at least – is now in the hands of Jon and Erich Hoeber.

Conceived by Paul Terry and his Terrytoons company for 20th Century Fox back in 1942, the character was originally conceived as a Superman riff and was actually titled Super Mouse before Terry learned of another character in a comicbook with the name.

With its instantly recognisable theme tune (we particularly like Andy Kaufman’s "performance" of it, a version of which you can hear in Man On The Moon{ =nofollow}) and long history, Mighty Mouse would seem to be a prime candidate for a family-friendly franchise. Paramount has had the rights for years, aiming for a long time to make an animated movie via its Nickelodeon Movies label but now looking more towards a hybrid CG/live-action affair. The Hoebers are the latest writers taking a crack at the film having most recently written The Meg. They also have My Spy, starring Dave Bautista, headed to cinemas this year.
