Next month's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald sees Johnny Depp back in blockbuster territory. But as ever, he's got one eye on other, smaller projects and has now agreed to play war photographer W. Eugene Smith in indie drama Minamata.
The film gets its title from a Japanese city, where Smith earned acclaim working for Life magazine and exposing the mercury poisoning that was destroying the coastal community. A recluse, with his glory days of World War II behind him, Smith found himself re-energised by the chance to document real events again.
Andrew Levitas is in the director's chair, working from a script that David K. Kessler adapted from Smith and Aileen Mioko Smith's book. The cameras will be rolling in Japan and then Serbia in January.
The latest Fantastic Beasts film lands on 16 November, and you can find Everything You Need To Know About It in our feature.
