There has been talk of a new version of John Woo's iconic action film The Killer for years now. Woo himself has been involved as a producer and the hunt has been on, with directors and potential leads coming and going. Finally it appears we have the prime version heading towards a shoot, Woo in place to direct and Lupita Nyong'o the chosen actor to star.
Universal is coughing up the cash to get the movie made, and assuming Nyong'o makes a deal, she'll play an assassin in similar style to Chow Yun-Fat's character in the original, helping a woman she blinded during a recent hit. At one point, it looked like the setting would be switched to contemporary Los Angeles, but there's no indication if that's still the case, and Woo is looking to kick off shooting in France and Germany later this year.
Writers Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken wrote the first draft of the current incarnation, with Eran Creevy taking over from them and Brian Helgeland tapping out a version to get the script into shape for production.
Nyong'o, last seen in Black Panther, has recently worked on horror comedy Little Monsters and may pop up as Maz Katana in Star Wars: Episode IX. She's also attached to star in the adaptation of Daily Show host Trevor Noah's autobiography, Born A Crime.
